My work is an exploration of the narrative between potential and decision. I intend to create a universe not unlike our own in terms of the landscape and the familiarity of figure; the places and people are recognizable. Yet the laws of physics and the realm of believability have been left behind in order to free the narrative for metaphor and allegory; to allow the characters an infinite number of decisions. I imply the moment before these choices are resolved.
I draw inspiration from grandiose Baroque paintings, science-fiction, broadsides of the early 20th century, fairy tale illustrations, traditional printmaking and the curious past of the American South. My process is motivated by reading old newspapers and scientific journals in order to track the passing of time; to follow the arc of ideas that travel from past to present to future. I do this in order to dissect the method of progress and to predict the prospects that actions and emotions cause.
My working method is a combination of careful initial planning followed by intuitively working towards a visual narrative. I employ traditional printmaking techniques because I enjoy the physicality involved with using the specific machines and the quality of the printed line. Im continually impressed with the historical significance of print media and the economy of creating multiples.
